Why I Want to Teach

For the past 8 years, I have had a successful career as a graphic designer and marketing specialist — creating effective written and visual communications for a variety of industries. It was in this role that I discovered that I really enjoyed helping people learn. Taking my daughter to preschool and observing the teachers with the students further fueled my drive and passion to want to become an educator.

Pursuing a career in the field of education is something I have long considered. I felt that my friendly disposition, patience, and ability to simplify complex messages and ideas make me well-suited for the field. I have chosen teaching as my profession because I want to effect change in my community and make a positive impact in young people’s lives.

I’ll never forget what one of the elementary educators from my internship with the Inner City Planning & Community Development Service-Learning Program (UB Environmental Design program) said to me many years ago. She said, “It’s important to get the children’s attention while they’re still little. When they get to grade 5, you won’t be able to get through to them.” While I don’t think that statement is entirely accurate, as there is hope for students at any age, I do believe it is important to lay a good foundation of education and engage children from a young age. It is easy to lose hope for yourself or become frustrated at school when you are not given the support or skills needed to succeed. I know from my own experience that no matter your learning style, if the appropriate educational goals are established, all children can meet them.

In my many years as a student, I have found that the most effective educators were the ones who engaged, challenged, and inspired. The unconventional teaching methods of the professor who engaged the class with his NASA scientist character for the entire semester, the professor who challenged my fear of public speaking, and the art teacher that inspired me to pursue my initial career in design are all examples of effective teaching. I aim to make a similar impact — to engage; to challenge; and to inspire young children.
